View Full Version : Tranny questions
well, since 3rd gear is grinding im thinking about getting a new tranny. my question to you fine folk would be...
would it be cheaper to just buy new gears and have it rebuilt, or just buy a whole new one? also, is it possible to mount another b series tranny, one with a different gear ratio, possibly lower, to my motor?
please keep in mind that i am newb.
Hey man! I'm guessing you have a b18c or b18a1! Right? Anyway yes you can lower gear ratios, yes it might be cheaper to buy a new tranny ($600-$800 for a YS1, or a gsr hydraulic, which might cost a hundred more) Usually unless you know someone who works at a shop, to fix a gear can be anywhere between $400 to $1000(depending on how bad the situation is and where you get your estimate) Usually any b series transmisions will fit on to any b series block because they have the right size bell housing and bolt pattern, but don't quote me on that...Good suggestion is to haul your car down to a transmission speacialist shop and suck all the info you need out of whoever helps you, When you're done there go to another one and ask the same questions and see what you come up with! I'm a new_B as well and what I just told you comes from the answers I got from the questions I've asked!
Any new-B advice would be to ask as many questions as possible and see what you come out with! never settle for one answer because you'll soon find that 50% of the people out there are biased and have no clue what they are talking about! However if you do meet a car guru that could tell you the base hp and torque for every single make and model import and some domestic along with turning ratios, gear ratios, ignition timing without looking at a book or website, you may want to refer your questions to him.....it just makes the whole tunning process less complicated! It all depends on where you could find one, and what kind of a deal you can get rebuilding it, remember if you rebuild it you have an almost new tranny, if you buy another used one you have the risk of it being messed up too.

yep, do some searching on honda-tech.com, i've seen some great deals on used tranny's there.
thank you for the reply's.... guys.
going into third, its not grinding that bad. its only when im at about 6000 rpm. so maybe i shouldnt worry about it too much right now? the 400 - 1000 dollars that you speak of for a new tranny could be put twords exhaust or something else that i need for my car right now :)
what are the differences in gear ratios between the stock tranny on a b18a1 and a GSR? lower? higher? i got new rims on my car and they are slowing me down. :/:rolleyes:

a gsr has shorter gear ratios, as well as a shorter final drive, making all the gears seem even shorter.
mating a GSR tranny with an LS motor usually isn't a good idea...
not that i doubt your expertise, but why is that? aside from it being like putting a square peg through a round hole?

you can put a square peg through a round hole so long as the square pegs edges are smaller than the round hole's diameter :p
indeed. but why is mating a ls engine to a gsr tranny a bad idea?

1st, 2nd and 3rd gears are the same in an ls and gsr tranny.
4th and 5th are taller in an ls tranny, so if you want good
gas mileage, go ls tranny......the gsr tranny WAS on my ls motor
til i decided to turbo it.....i get better gas mileage on the freeway
and once you are turboed, the taller gears just make boost more
fun......

First and second are the same, 3rd and up are taller. :)
The reason B18cya is telling you that it might not be a good idea has to do with the redline of an LS. The GSR redlines at 8,000rpm, but the gears are much shorter, which means that you are at a higher rpm at any given mph than you would be if you had the LS tranny. Let me just put it this way. I used to have a GSR, and at around 80mph in fifth gear, it would be at like 4,000rpm, but since the motor went to 8,000rpm I wasn't worried about it, because it seemed to be just fine.
Now however, I have a 90 RS and it's transmission (from the factory) has almost the same gears as the GSR, but only redlines at 6,500rpm. So, when I'm going 80 down the highway now in fifth gear, it's still at 4-4,500rpm, which is like 3/4 of the whole rev range. So it essentially feels like your driving around at 6,000rpm in a GSR, something I don't expect you'd want to do.
See what I mean?
old topic born again. :) thanks for the reply stu. so im guessing that i should just save up the dough for a new LS tranny? i dont like how third gear grinds. but im gonna have to deal for a while at least.

I could do the gear replacement for you for around 150 if you buy the gears which are typically around 30 to 40 dollars but typically if the tranny is grinding it is actually a synchronizer which is relatively inexpensive and yes I am a licensed tech
ok well there is one problem. i live in seattle :)
thank you though.

Oh yeah, things do change. My bro's SIR2 Y21 only reaches around 65-70mph at 4K in fifth gear on the highway. If he had a US box, it would be much better for highway use. Having different trannies does have it's advantages in different types of racing though. I wish he let me sport his tranny at the drags.
