I am going to start saving for a project which I plan on spending about 15000 over 2 years. The car must be rwd and boosted but besides that I am pretty open. I want it to atleast be quick and handle well. I was thinking a 240 with an SR20DET but I wasn't sure. Does anyone else have any other ideas?

An rx-7 turbo II would be a good option. You can make rotaries fast for cheap. I am currently building up my 240sx.

have you considered a kit car. Check out V6stalker.com. I've got at 240 I will start building once my crx is done, but I might change to that kit car. What do you want to use the car for? The kit isn't for everyone, but I think it looks pretty sweet

I will probably do a little autox a little drag racing and the occasional track day as well as weekend drives so it needs to be pretty versatille.

Why RWD vs AWD? You could buy a 1g DSM and mod it EASILY into the 12s for under $5k. Low 12s.

within the next year after my car is where i want it to be, i want to start my first project car, from the ground up. I think im goin to go with a porsche 914, its what i want, light, nimble, porsche for one, and also it has a targa, something i have been dieing for. I havent looked into it that much but a 1.8t audi/volkswagen motor will fit pretty easily, also the chrysler turbo engines will work. Plus its rwd and already low stock.

Sounds like a nice project.

Some cars I have considered were
E30 M3 with engine swap.
S13 with SR20 or RB25DET.
AE86
Caterham Super Seven (a little too expensive)

Miata with a 5.0.

Is that possible?

That would seriously mess up the weight distribution/:D

Handling is supposed to be very good on a 5.0 Miata. The Ford 302 is not a big engine but in a light car it would be a blast.

It is boosted (RB25DET) but it would cost way too much to legalize.

They estimate on that site that a converted miata would cost about 25k. A little bit out of my 15k budget. :(

don't hurt me, but.... a buick gn. ther was one in the springs wheel deals for 8500. v6 turbo. if you lower it and put some big stickies in the back they don't look bad.15000-8500=6500. 6500 for mods on an already turbo v6:) you could upgrade the turbo, get a ebc, throw in a high stall convertor and a transbrake, lower it, up grade the suspension and mutilate people and still get some in the back seat:)

I vote either s13 with sr20det or a turbo miata.

What about a KA thurbo s-13. I could save a little money on the power side and spend more in suspension and brakes.

What about handling. I don't think it will hold up well at an autocross even. I want a quick car, but handling and braking as well as overall cornering feel are my most important concerns.

i am not sure about handling bu there is enough money left to up grade the suspension and brakes

a cobra kit car would have insane power and handling

KA24 is the stock engine, right? i don't really know much about those silly Nissans:o

What about a MR-2? I saw a few of those at the autocross event.

I think that's the cost for them to do the conversion. I don't see why you couldn't do it for $15k.

You could get a donor Mustang for about $2500 and the conversion kit is $4000. That would leave around $8500 for a used Miata and misc. expenses.

3RD GEN RX-7!

I got a buddy with a 87 RX7 that has a JDM 2 rotor in it. Has 18" wheels, Racing beat downpipe, gauges, Greddy profec B, spare motor, gauges, etc. He wants around $2k I think for it.

OR you could buy my 323 GTX. 15K in mods in that thing and you could prolly own anyone you'd want to with it.

How much for the 323?

I just dont get that. I hear it everyday about how you can do that. But lookng through nationwide autotrader, 1G DSMs that dont have major mechanical problems are averaging low/mid $4000s. So you're saying for $1000 or less you can make it a 12 sec car ?What for one run?

Well, I have a 240SX w/SR20DET, it's quick, not fast at this moment. The car handles pretty good stock. I did SCCA with it when it was stock and was doing better than GSXs and AWD Celica Turbos w/mods. Now, my main goal is to get the exhaust leak fixed (so I can hit full boost sometime before 4500 rpm, get the full exhaust, full coil over kit, and wheels and tires (these 195s aren't cutting it)

Total, my car has been 6.2k dollars.

Not exactly true, they are getting quite popular, but I wouldn't pay anything over 3.5k for a 1st gen DSM, a buddy of mine is buying one rightn ow that has a rebuilt motor for 2.5k it's a 90.

how bout a 944 turbo? should be able to get one for $6-10,000. should be able to find plenty of upgrades out there. they handle great stock. already pretty quick especially if you get one of the later "s" models. i used to know someone who had a turbo s modified. it would outrun a stock 911 turbo.

You should drop a 13B in a Miata.

I've heard the 944 being called the "poor man's porsche"

Or if you want a reliable Miata you could do what Pat wants to do and buy a 94 Miata and then go here: www.flyinmiata.com and be well on your way to a 300rwhp Miata. Let's see someone call you a fag after that. Those guys are even local.
