Enduro for a first bike?

I'm thinking of getting a bike and learning to ride.

Crotch rockets aren't my thing really, so I've been thinking of an alternative to a sport bike. I'm considering looking into buying a street/dirt bike to learn on and a few year later moving up to a Gold Wing.

Would an Enduro be a good first bike and if so which are some good ones to get started on? I'm figuring a used bike would probably be best, both to save money and to minimize the cost of the inevitable nicks and scrapes I'll put on it while learning.

You could get a used enduro for cheap. It would be a good place to start.

Or do what I am thinking of doing and getting and old 4-cylinder jap bike, like an old CB Honda, which can be had for less then $1k and riding around this summer.
