View Full Version : Why do people hate B16's?

Ive noticed a lot of hostility towards the beloved littel B16 lately and was wondering why. Some of the fastest hondas on this board run the little guy. So why all the haterz? Are some of you still part of the "AInt no repalcement for displacement" school?

Because they don't want to admit that a little 1.6L "hamster" engine can beat them.
But, it's also over-hyped as well. Someone once told me I should do a B16 swap... I didn't even know what to say to that. It made me stupider for having heard it.

I drove my g/f LS powered Integra for a while this weekend and I'm so glad I have a b16 in my car... even though the Integra is heavier I cant see myself driving it much unless I dont have to go over 35mph

try a gsr tho...the ls has waaay different characteristics. the shorter gearing & higher revving make it head & shoulders above the b18b.
for the price tho, a b16 boosted would be waay cheaper than a b18c1 boosted.
for an NA setup tho, id have to say b18c1 simply because of the larger displacement. (unless you want to attempt the crvtec.)

I'd probably put a B16 in my car if I ever blow the little engine that could up, and if I could afford the B16A2.

I don't hate them but I think a better altenrative would be a B18C5. If I ever did a B-series swap in my car that is the only thing that would go in.

That's not really an alternative. That's like a 3,000$ difference.

I guess it really depends on what you want and how deep your pockets are I guess. I see it as an alternative just as a b16b, b18c1 or b18b are alternatives.
I liked my B16 when i had my Si, it was a solid enginea dn makes great power for its size. However like Isaiah I would go B18C5 in a honda if I had one again, but I would also look at a c1 all depending on what route I was going to go with the car.

Ive had all three of the VTEC B series in various cars and I love all of them. The 16 however has made me the happiest for the money invested and the reliability that I expect from a Honda.
Mind you if I were to set out to build a car that can crack off a 10 second pass the 16 would not be in my top five choices. But you have to admit I have made more 13 second passes without incident than many other similarly boosted (10 psi) bigger B.
The little B deserves a littel more cedit.
w3rd, the b16 gets its job done.

that's pretty much how I feel.
it is a great motor, and for it's size, can do a lot. I just think there are better choices out there if your looking for a "drag" motor, which most people are.
but the low price of them these days, and the fact that it's about 100 times easier to get a b16 shortblock over a b18c1 shortblock is kind of nice.

I like b16's. I'd build one up for my future rex, but it is too much for me. :(

I just sold my sleeper with a B16. Boy did I make a big mistake!! Of course that's what happens when you move from Hawaii. I could only afford to ship two cars and not three. Looking for a new project though. SO, if anyone has a crx or a civic with a blown motor or even a shell, let me know.
But on the subject, I never heard anyone bag on the B16 myself, unless they: 1. drive something other than a Honda or 2: can't afford one or maybe 3. been beat by one!!

I'm a fan of bigger displacement motors now :) but the b16 is still cool if boosted.

i like my little 2 liter, oh wait, were talkin about honda motors, i thought you wanted performance ;) j/k The B16 is a pretty sweet little motor. I drove violators hybrid around a few times and it always surprised me how the little thing would pull.

I'm thinking the same thing right now. My B16A coupe was pretty quick, with a turbo kit it would've been very fast. I sold mine and bought my mr2, which now sits on jackstands in my garage until I have a new engine and tranny. I miss my honda...it ran. :(

Because they just plain suck. That's why--- all you B16A Queers can eat shit. :p :p
But I dunno, I just like the like the idea that I have 202 more cc's and that my car was faster than yours. :p
B16 has potential for sure, and shouldn't be overlooked, I've just always opted for the 1.8.
